In application disc springs can be used as single discs,
or arranged in stacks. The concept of a disc springs dates
from the 1860's when a patent was filed by a M.Belleville,
whose name is frequently used to describe this type of component.
Modern disc spring have, however, moved away from Belleville's
original design, in which the material was relatively thick
with only a small amount of conical 'dish'.
The real breakthrough in the
development of the disc spring came in 1936 when Almen and
Laszlo published their A.S.M.E. paper "The Uniform
Section Disc Spring".
