Descriptions
:- Spring
Pin is a very reliable low cost fastening system, which
is particularly suitable for large volume production. It
is used in huge quantities, in countless applications, and
in widely ranging industries from automobile production
for electronics. A slotted spring pin is a cylindrical slotted
pin of hardened spring steel, which is accurately made to
a diameter greater than the drilled hole which it is pressed.
It is simply driven in and retained by continuous outward
spring pressure throughout the full length of the hole.
|
|
| The
Purpose of the slot in the pin is to allow compression when
inserted in the hole. The outward spring forces act positivily
in preventing loosening by vibration. The forces required
to dislodge a pin from an assembly are great , and there is
little danger of vibration conditions. Due to the flexibility
in the spring design, Slotted Spring Pins are excellent in
shock load situation, and avoid the problems of solid pins
which may fracture or cause damage to the other components
of an assembly through their rigidity. Slotted Spring Pins
are very light and exceptionally strong due to the material
and heat treatment used. |

Apart
from the low basic cost, these pins, offer vastly reduced assembly
times. Only a plain-drilled hole required to normal drilling tolerances.
There is no need for any reaming, threading or counter boring.
The pins are easy to insert, either by hand or by automated assembly.
No special skills are required; assembly can be carried out quite
safely with unskilled labour.
| Spring
Pins can be removed using driver, however they should preferably
be fitted into a through hole; it is very difficult to remove
Spring Pins from a blind hole.
Spring Pins require very little
space in the product design. The pin is totally contained
within the drilled hole and so there may be useful space
savings by the avoidance of interference with other parts
of the assembly.

In short, Spring Pins offer many
advantages over alternative assembly or pin techniques:
- Very low cost.
- Fast to install.
- Highly suitable for large
volume assembly.
- No special skills required.
- Secure.
- Strong.
- Vibration resistant.
- Resilience to shock loads.
- Easily designed into an
assembly.

Insertion of the pins is assisted
by accurate square ends and by good chamfers at both ends of the
pins. The simplest method of inserting a Spring Pin is a hand
hammer, which will drive the pin home in a very satisfactory manner.
Where assembly quantities justify more sophisticated methods a
compressed air cylinders are used extensively. Spring Pins can
be had loaded, or fed
automatically using a vibratory bowl feed.
|
Spring Pins have a number of
positive features when compared with other types of pins,
such as coiled spiral pins or solid pins:
- Secure Location in the hole.
- Excellent vibration resistance.
- No protruding edges to impair
hinge design
Excellent chamferswhich ease insertion.

Spring Pins have proved over several
decades to be an extremely reliable type of fastening device and
this has led them becoming a standard fastening device and this
has led them becoming a standard fastening method with good availability.
Many applications now using other
types of pins or fasteners would benefit from the use of Spring
Pins, and would show significant cost savings.
